Slip & Fall Accidents May Have Serious Consequences
April 9, 2014 | Category: Slip and Fall Accidents | ShareThe National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI) reports that 55% of all slip and fall accidents are caused by walking surfaces which are hazardous. What can make walking surfaces hazardous? Some of the causes are:
- Torn carpeting
- Cluttered floors
- Defective sidewalks
- Potholes in parking lots
- Poorly constructed staircases
- Recently washed or waxed floors
- Uneven surfaces
- Defective products
Weather conditions also present problems. Outdoor slip and fall injuries can be the result of rain which can make walking a slippery experience. Florida sees a marked increase in slip and fall accidents both outdoors and indoors whenever it rains. Slippery wet floors in businesses, schools, condominium entrances and other locations often lead to serious slip and fall accidents such as fractures, head, neck and back injuries, torn knee meniscus and other debilitating injuries. The injury is even more severe if the victim is elderly.
The NFSI further reports that 24% of slip and fall accidents are as a result of footwear which does not provide enough traction. This footwear not only includes high heeled shoes, but also worn sneakers and work boots.
In the workforce, improper, or no, training can lead to on-the-job slip and fall accidents. The manufacturing and construction industries may require that workers walk on narrow pathways or slick surfaces. Employers have a responsibility to workers to provide training and the proper safety equipment.
Nursing home and assisted living facilities also need to properly monitor and assist residents in their facilities. These residents are more likely to slip and fall than others because of deteriorating balance. There is more likelihood of sustaining life-threatening injuries for nursing and assisted living residents.
"It is the responsibility of businesses, schools, apartments, condominiums, associations and other public entities to provide, and maintain, safe walking areas by regular inspection and maintenance. Also, there may be design defects which create situations that cause slip and fall accidents. Should you, or a loved one, be injured as a result of a slip and/or fall due to the negligence of others, contact the Fort Myers Personal Injury Attorneys who will investigate the cause," says Attorney Randall Spivey.
