In a News-Press article on September 24, Lt. Greg Bueno, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), said, "During 2013, 491 pedestrians and bicyclists were involved in crashes within Lee County. Of the 491, 355 were injured and 25 lost their lives."

The state of Florida is the most dangerous state in the nation for pedestrians, according to a  report by Transportation for America. During the ten years from 2000 to 2009 -  5,163 Floridians were killed while walking.  This total is almost 11 percent of all those killed nationwide during the same period.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report on pedestrian safety finds that a pedestrian is 16 times more likely to be killed in a crash occurring on a road with a posted speed limit of 50 mph or higher, than on a road with a speed limit of under 30 mph. At higher vehicle speeds, a collision is not only more deadly, but far more likely. Even without the distractions of cell phones, a driver needs 164 feet to stop a vehicle moving at just 40 mph.

Pedestrian Accident Epidemic - Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.The FHP and the Lee County Sheriff's Office took part in the quarterly "Operation P.E.D.S." program on Fort Myers Beach on Wednesday, September 24.  P.E.D.S. stands for pedestrian education in developing safety.  The purpose of the event was to bring awareness and understanding to pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists of the crashes in Lee County. At various checkpoints around Fort Myers Beach, patrolmen and deputies handed out literature and safety equipment to those who stopped by.

"In an effort to stop preventable pedestrian accidents, we applaud the FHP and the Lee County Sheriff's Office for this much needed work in their efforts to lower pedestrian injuries and deaths in Lee County," says Lee County Accident Attorney, Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
