The Children’s Campaign, a non-profit charitable organization, says that nearly 60 percent of Florida’s 4 million children are either living in or near poverty, or in households that are one missed paycheck or lost job away from not being able to meet basic needs. These children are vulnerable to low academic achievement, dropping out of school, abuse and neglect, behavioral problems, socioemotional problems, physical health problems, and developmental delays.

“The Cape Coral Fraternal Order of Police 2020 ‘Shop With a Cop’ Back-to-School program has been helping children through this program since August 2018. There is no shortage of needy children in Lee County, including those in foster care and handicapped elementary school children. Police officers escort the children as they shop for school clothes, shoes, socks, underclothing, school supplies, and book bags. Active and retired men and women of the Cape Coral Police Department spend positive one-on-one time with the children.

Private donations are used to fund this Cape Coral Fraternal Order of Police program. Every year they attempt to increase the number of children who are helped, and this year will be no exception, especially since many families are going through turbulent times because of the pandemic. 

Following the first “Shop With a Cop” Back-to-School program in 2018, Officer Paul Blanchard said, “The success of this event was made possible by the generosity of our citizens. Beyond providing school supplies, the program allows local law enforcement to get to know the community we serve and protect on a daily basis.”
