Study: Motorcycle Cameras to Improve Safety Training
January 30, 2013 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | ShareAs reported by NBC-2 News January 11, 2013, most recent available data shows an increase in Florida's motorcycle crashes of 15% from 2010 - 2011. The number of motorcyclists killed rose 18% to 413.
To address the issue of motorcycle safety, a partnership agreement between the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) launched the world's first large-scale naturalistic motorcycle riding study in August 2011.
Each of 100 participant motorcycles is equipped with five color cameras and other monitoring instrumentation. Two age groups are being studied 21 to 34 and 45 to 64 years. Researchers expect approximately 500,000 miles of riding data. Mike Ginocchi, a retired crash investigator from Ft. Myers who logs more than 20,000 miles each year, is a participant in the study.
Tom Dingus, VTTI Director says, "We know of no other naturalistic study for motorcycles. We expect the study to be very valuable to MSF's work (The largest trainer of motorcycle riders in the world.), since we also will examine where and how crash avoidance is successful. With so much information bandwidth coming from the cameras and instrumentation on each bike, we'll be able to examine details for years, and the findings will be relevant for decades."
"Motorcycle safety training is a requirement for obtaining a Florida Motorcycle Endorsement (already hold a Florida driver's license), Motorcycle Only License, or Three Wheel Motorcycle License (restricted to three wheel motorcycle only). Requirements and enrollment may be found by clicking Florida DMV Online Guide . As a Motorcycle Accident Injury Lawyer, I applaud the VTTI/MSF for studying this important issue." says Randall Spivey, Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
