Sun Glare - A Florida Driving Hazard
November 1, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareOn September 17, 2013 around 7:30 a.m. a vehicle in Lake Wales, Florida was involved in not one, but two separate crashes because of the sun's glare. The driver of a Ford Expedition slowed down because the sun's rays created a situation where he could not see well. A Chrysler 300 travelling in the same direction did not see the Ford Expedition slow down and rear-ended the SUV leaving the Chrysler 300 inoperable. The Ford Expedition was able to pull off the road; however, the Chrysler 300 was not. Shortly thereafter, a Chevrolet Avalanche driver, also blinded by the glare, collided with the Chrysler 300.
Accuweather.com in Steering Away From Sun Glare , typically between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., reports that driving directly against the sun can block peripheral areas of vision and cause sudden moments of blindness as the sun peeks out from behind surrounding objects.
"Driving in the early morning and evening hours is dangerous and the cause of many auto crashes, truck crashes and motorcycle crashes," said Florida Accident Attorney, Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
Below are some tips from the American Automobile Association (AAA) when driving into the sun:
- Invest in polarized sunglasses. They can help reduce glare.
- Utilize your sun visor. It can help block out the sun.
- Leave more following room. When the sun is in your eyes, it can be hard to see what the car ahead is doing. This is one more time when it pays to leave more room between you and the next vehicle.
- Drive with your headlights on to increase your visibility to other drivers.
- Keep your windshield clean, inside and out.
- Check your windshield for pitting and cracks.
- Avoid storing papers or other items on the dashboard.
- If having a difficult time seeing the road, use lane markings to help guide you. Rarely will visibility be absolutely perfect while driving, but if motorists know this and make the proper adjustments, you can minimize any additional risks that come with less-than-optimal visual conditions.
