Teen Driver Distraction - A Growing Problem
June 19, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareA Driver Distraction study done by Toyota and the University of Michigan, and released in November 2012, found that 54% of teens reported driving while using hand-held cell phones, and 30% of teens admitted to reading a text one or more times every time they drive. The study also reports that teens are 26 times more likely to text while driving than their parents think, and despite heightened risks, teens are often driving with multiple teens in their vehicles, presenting the potential for added distraction. Since teens will be driving even more during the summer months when schools are closed for vacation, teen driver distraction could be a growing problem.
Lee County Injury Prevention Coalition sponsors a Young Driver Program each month from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. This month's program is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25, at the Lee Memorial Hospital Auditorium, and it is free to new young drivers between the ages of 15 and 21 and their parents. New technology presented at the Young Driver Program, lets teens see what it is like to drive while distracted.
Many lives have changed because of driver distractions. According to a video on the Lee County Injury Prevention Coalition website titled: Danger Ahead: A Must See Video simple text messages such as LOL or YEAH have caused death either to the distracted driver or others.
"I encourage new young drivers to attend the Lee County Injury Prevention Coalition's Young Driver Program. Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling the Lee County Injury Prevention Coalition at 239.343.3797. The Coalition does not post the monthly programs in advance.
