Texting and Driving - A Toxic Combination
February 5, 2014 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareOn January 14, 2014 a driver was texting while driving in Fort Myers, FL. The evidence was insurmountable when a police car caught the whole action with its dashboard camera. The car, driven by a 23 year-old, drove onto a sidewalk and crashed into a bus sign and a tree then flipped over. ABC-7 carried the CNN report on the vehicle crash which contained this video which the Fort Myers Police released calling it "a friendly reminder on the severity of texting while driving". Texting and Driving Safety.com, partnering with SADD (Students Against Drunk Drivers), schools, universities, and businesses in the U.S. and Canada, reports that "5 seconds, which is the minimum amount of time one's attention is taken away from the road when texting and driving represents, at 55 mph, driving the length of a football field without looking at the road". They further report that in 2011, 23% of all vehicle crashes involved cell phones which equates to 1.3 million crashes.
The AAA (American Automobile Association) Foundation for Traffic Safety Culture Index of 2013 data indicated a climate where people may understand and voice the dangers of risky driving behaviors, but few heed that knowledge. Nearly 89% of drivers may say that talking on a cell phone, for example, while driving is at least somewhat of a concern but close to 70% admitted to talking on a cell phone while driving within the previous 30 days. The foundation believes, when looking at the results of the survey, that "many lives could be saved if motorists put into action their beliefs and values about safe driving".
"The Fort Myers Police Department dashboard camera footage should be seen by everyone as a reminder that texting and driving are a toxic combination and results in many auto crashes and truck crashes," recommended Attorney Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. "
