Tips for Parents of Teen Drivers

May 3, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

May is prom and graduation time for many of our driving teens.  It should be a happy time for our youth, and usually is.  However, the news media often covers stories of vehicle accidents involving teen drivers, especially around these occasions.

We, and our teens, often celebrate when they get their first driver's license.  It is a "rite of passage" for many.  Prior to getting the license, parents and guardians make sure the teen driver is taught how to drive in order to pass the driving test.  However, once the license is obtained, is the teaching over?  Statistics show that a teen's risk of being in a car crash is highest in the first 12 months after getting the driver's license.

The National Safety Council Drive It Home program urges parents to take these simple steps with their new teen drivers:

  • Drive at least 30 minutes each week with a newly licensed teen.
  • Practice specific skills together and provide teens with feedback in the following critical areas:

* Scanning the road ahead to recognize and respond to hazards.
*  Controlling speed, stopping, turning and following distance.
*  Judging the gap between vehicles in traffic - such as exiting   parking lots and left-hand turns.
*  Managing the highest risks, such as night driving and driving with young passengers.
