Tips for Taking After-Accident Photos

February 22, 2024 | Category: Automobile Accidents, Motorcycle Accidents, Truck Accidents | Share

It is often said that pictures are worth a thousand words. This is particularly true when you are injured in an accident because of the negligence of another, whether the accident is a car, motorcycle, truck, slip and fall, pedestrian, bicycle, or nursing home accident. Pictures and/or videos can be important to the outcome of your personal injury case.

Multiple photos will be able to corroborate the story of the accident. If you are unable to take photos and/or videos of the accident scene, others who witnessed the accident may be of assistance.

What Photos Can Be Taken?

Some of the photos should include:

  • Make and model of all vehicles involved in the accident, including their license plates. This is in addition to the information in any police reports.
  • Damage to all the vehicles involved in the accident. These photos may show the location of the accident and the impact caused by the negligent driver’s vehicle.
  • If possible, inside-vehicle photos could show deployed airbags and other evidence to corroborate your case.
  • Any environmental photos, including any traffic signs, road markings, traffic lights, landscapes, and road hazards.
  • If authorities at the scene are taking photos, you should take the same photos, from the same distance and angle.
  • Photos of your injuries and those of any passengers may seem gruesome, but they will show the severity of the accident. Bruises and scratches can also be captured as they may lead to more severe injuries that are not at first apparent.
  • Accidents often leave evidence around. There may be skid marks and/or debris in the road that can be important to your personal injury case. In slip and fall accidents, photos of the cause of the accident should be taken. For example, should you fall in a grocery store because a broken bottle creates a wet floor, taking photos quickly before the floor has dried or is cleaned will help your Florida personal injury attorney in proving your case.

Distance and Angles of Photos

Experts suggest taking photos at various distances and angles – close-up photos - 1-5 feet away, mid-distance - 10-15 feet away, and far away - 20 or more feet away. These will help provide scale and location.

Document Photos

Taking photos of documents that are exchanged by those involved in accidents can prove the accuracy of the information and are easier to store.

Physical Photos

As you are treated for your injuries caused by the negligence of others, having progressive photos will assist your case. They will document the severity of the accident and the pain and suffering to which you have been subjected.
