Traffic Accidents and Fatalities Are Up

March 29, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

It's March 2013 and traffic accidents with fatalities are up.  The News Press reported March 2, 2012 that as of February 28, 2013, there were 23 fatal crashes in Lee County.  These crashes included at least six pedestrians, three bicyclists and three motorcyclists.  Cape Coral had many of these vehicle accidents; even two in one hour on Friday, February 28.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Gregory Bueno said, "Most crashes are caused by driver error, and many driver errors are caused by distracted drivers.  Violation of right of way and careless driving are some of the most common charges."

Lee County Florida roads are more dangerous with the influx of tourists.  In 2012 Lee County had 1.4 million visitors according to the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau. Since we are still in "tourist season", figures for 2013 are not available.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, State and County QuickFacts, the most current population figures for Lee County are 631,300 in 2011.

When there is an increase in traffic, there is the likelihood of more accidents because of distracted drivers.  Southwest Florida Accident Attorney, Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. says, "I am seeing an uptick in distracted driving accidents.  These often involve higher speed collisions because the driver looks down at a phone or takes his eyes off the road and never even slows or brakes before impact.  The higher speed increases the risk of serious injury and death.  Often, the careless driver never hit his brakes."

"Distracted driving often leads to serious rear-end accidents.  And also leads to distracted drivers running red lights and stop signs, often broad-siding the victim's car at a high rate of speed, with a direct impact into where the victim is sitting. The other trend I am seeing is that distracted driving is not limited to a certain age group.  It is occurring in all age categories." says Attorney Spivey.
