Traffic Down - Speeding Up
May 20, 2020 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareFor the last few months, most people in the United States have been staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to a dramatic drop in traffic. Traffic analytics company Inrix says passenger vehicle traffic in Florida is about half what it was before stay-at-home orders took effect, businesses shut down and schools closed.
However, there has been a dangerous surge in speeding. According to the Miami-Herald, a lot of drivers are seeing open roads as an invitation to speed.
Josh Taylor, a North Port Police Department spokesperson said, “Officers say just driving around, it seems as though speeding has increased.”
Sarasota is also one of the areas where the police department reported an increase in speeding, especially along the city’s main thoroughfares. The Sarasota Police Department reports drivers have been clocked going 90 mph.
Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Alex Camacho said the spike in triple-digit speeding is alarming. Anyone clocked going 50 mph above the limit is subject to a mandatory minimum fine of $1,000, which goes up to $2,500 the second time.
“There’s absolutely no reason to speed right now. You’ll get where you’re going faster than you normally would just by driving the speed limit,” Lt. Camacho said. “It’s a stressful time. So we’re using heavy discretion, but we are enforcing speed limits. One of the good things about congestion, although everybody hates it, is it’s a deterrent to speeding.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says, “Speeding endangers everyone on the road: In 2018, speeding killed 9,378 people. Speeding is more than just breaking the law. The consequences are far-ranging:
- Greater potential for loss of vehicle control;
- Reduced effectiveness of occupant protection equipment;
- Increased stopping distance after the driver perceives a danger;
- Increased degree of crash severity leading to more severe injuries;
- Economic implications of a speed-related crash; and
- Increased fuel consumption/cost.”
