Trek Asks Bikers To Immediately Stop Riding Some Of Their Bikes

October 30, 2015 | Category: Bike Accidents | Share

One biker was left a quadriplegic and at least two others suffered broken fingers, wrist injuries, shoulder injuries and abrasions as the result of a faulty quick-release (QT) lever on the front disc brakes of Trek bikes. Trek issued a recall of the affected bikes which were manufactured between 2000 and 2015.In September 2015 approximately 1.3 million bicycles were recalled by 13 other manufacturers due to the crash hazard, according to the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

According to a Trek dealer, Jeff Palmer, Spokes Bicycles, in Vienna, Virginia, the quick-release lever can rotate beyond 180 degrees and get stuck in the disc break. When this happens, the bike will abruptly stop, causing the rider to have potential injuries. Bikes which have quick-release levers that do not rotate 180 degrees are not affected by the recall. Consumers with questions are asked to call Trek at (800) 373-4594 or visit

What if you have a defective bike?

The CPSC suggests that you contact the bike manufacturer. The bike manufacturer will be able to give information about where the quick-release levers may be replaced. Also, the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association has a quick-release recall website. Here's a link to the website: www.quickreleaserecall.com

In the United States, manufacturers have a legal responsibility to provide products that are reasonably safe. If a manufacturer should fail to do so, and it releases a dangerous product that causes harm, the injured party has a right to file a claim or a lawsuit against the manufacturer to recover damages they sustained. There may also be charges filed against bicycle assemblers should there be an accident caused because the bicycle was incorrectly assembled. Bike manufacturers cannot legally sell, or allow riders to use, bicycles which they know have defects.

In Seattle, WA, an employee, James Osborn, of REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.) filed suit against his employer for the injuries which left him paralyzed after he was riding an REI-manufactured bicycle. Mr. Osborn had been an IT director for thirteen years when he and nine other riders went for a lunchtime ride in June 2007. He was cruising at 25 mph when his bike broke under him. When his head hit the pavement, his spine twisted which left his arms and legs paralyzed. Walking is now difficult for Mr. Osborne.
