"Because motorcycles are the smallest vehicles on the road, with little protection, and they share the roads with vehicle drivers who may not understand the behavior of motorcyclists, motorcyclists are the most vulnerable on the road," reminds Attorney Randall Spivey, Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
Driving around motorcycles can be a challenge. Many accidents involving motorcycles and other vehicles happen at intersections when vehicles are making left turns. According to Drive-Safely.net - "Vehicles turning in front of motorcycles is the number one cause of fatal accidents for motorcycle riders."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and law enforcement officials suggest vehicle drivers become motorcycle savvy; aggressive "watchers" for motorcycles:
- Don't be a distracted driver; distracted drivers are often involved in crashes with motorcycles.
- Double the amount of space between your vehicle and a motorcycle as it can stop much more quickly.
- Watch out for potholes, wet roads, gravel, work areas - as these are motorcycle obstacles often requiring a motorcyclist to take quick evasive action.
- Always use your turn signal before changing lanes or merging so that motorcyclists are aware of your intentions.
- Don't share a lane with a motorcycle.
- Be particularly watchful for motorcycles at night and other times when there is low visibility.
