What Are Delayed Injuries After A Car or Motorcycle Crash?
November 16, 2016 | Category: Automobile Accidents, Motorcycle Accidents, Personal Injury | ShareNot every injury in a car or motorcycle crash is evident immediately following the event. Many very serious physical issues may not be obvious for several days or even weeks thereafter. These injuries, called “delayed” injuries, may involve the spine, neck and/or head. Soft tissue injuries which involve muscles, ligaments and tendons may also not present themselves right away.
Some of the common types of delayed accident injuries reported by the Iowa Chiropractic Clinic include whiplash and concussions or traumatic brain injuries.
Whiplash: The most common injury to the neck is a whiplash injury. Whiplash is caused by a sudden movement of the head, either backward, forward, or sideways, that results in damage to the supporting muscles, ligaments and other connective tissues in the neck and upper back. A whiplash may present itself with:
- Headaches
- Reduced range of motion or difficulty moving
- Slowed reflexes
- Vertigo
- Muscle spasms
- Localized weakness or numbness
- Stiffness in shoulders and arms
Concussions or Traumatic Brain Injuries: A concussion or traumatic brain injury is the result of the brain colliding with the inside of the skull from a rapid acceleration or deceleration. These injuries often present minimal symptoms in the beginning, but later the symptoms may be:
- Headaches
- Bad temper
- Nausea
- Spasms
- Loss of balance
- Blurred or double vision
- Disorientation
- Confusion
- Amnesia
- Ringing in the ears
- Difficulty concentrating or reasoning
- Anxiety or depression
- Tiredness, sleeplessness, or other problems with the ability to sleep
In addition to whiplash and concussions/traumatic brain injuries, sprains, bruises, and contusions may also present themselves after a body stabilizes and inflammation occurs. Spine and nerve injuries, according to InjuryPhysicians.com, over time can result from bulging discs which can invade the nerve space. This often causes pain and a loss of sensation.
“People involved in vehicle and motorcycle accidents should never take a ‘wait and see’ attitude when it comes to the possibly of injury. The delay of treatment could make minor injuries worse, and the possibility of a positive outcome to a personal injury case more difficult,” said Fort Myers Personal Injury Attorney, Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
What should a vehicle or motorcycle accident victim do?
- Seek medical attention immediately.
- Take detailed notes of injuries and medical treatment. Victims should know the names and addresses of every practitioner visited:
- Doctors
- Chiropractors
- Physical therapists
- Other professionals to whom the victim is referred
- Keep all receipts for medications and assistive devices such as crutches and record everything.
“After seeking medical assistance, it is extremely important that those injured in vehicle or motorcycle accidents contact a personal injury attorney. Our team of experienced attorneys is available to assist you, and there is no cost or attorney fees until you win,” said Attorney Randall Spivey.
