February 13, 2017 | Category: Automobile Accidents, Motorcycle Accidents, Truck Accidents | Share“Vehicle accidents have significant consequences for those injured, and these cases can be complicated. It is important that following an accident with injuries, that an experienced Fort Myers Car Accident Attorney from Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. be contacted,” said Randall Spivey.
In Florida, state records show that from 2011 to 2015, crashes rose 63 percent from 229,210 to 373,853. Injuries increased 34 percent, and deaths jumped 21 percent over the same five years, as reported in The Gainesville News.
For every accident in Florida there are consequences that can change the lives of those injured forever. These consequences, according to MyPhysiciansNow.com, involve a wide variety of severe injuries including:
- Head injuries. A blow to the head or a piercing head injury can damage the brain, an injury known as traumatic brain injury (TBI). Other head injuries, such as eye injuries, which can result in partial vision loss or blindness; injuries to the ear that result in loss of hearing; facial or jaw fractures; and dental injuries, including loss of teeth.
- Neck and back injuries. Whiplash is the most common injury suffered in car accidents. Whiplash can damage the vertebrae, ligaments or disks, or the spinal cord itself, in the neck and back. This can cause paralysis or other loss of function in one or more limbs or larger portions of the body.
- Chest injuries. The crushing impact of a collision can break ribs and/or the sternum (breast bone), particularly if a driver or passenger was not restrained by seat belts.A diaphragm rupture (a tear of the muscle across the bottom of the rib cage that is crucial to respiration) is a common result of blunt or penetrating trauma to the trunk or lower chest.
- Pelvis/abdominal injuries. Compressive pelvic injuries (hip fracture) and injury to abdominal organs are common in motor vehicle accidents. The liver, spleen and kidneys are frequently injured in front- and side-impact collisions.
- Leg, knee and foot injuries. Most leg and knee injuries in car accidents are impact or crush injuries caused by smashing into a part of the car. Ankles, feet and toes can easily be strained, sprained or broken (fractured) or even severed in a car accident.
WebMD says that like other types of trauma, vehicle accidents can cause long-term stress that affects work and relationships. This can eventually lead to depression, anxiety, and sleep problems.
The steep medical bills and rehabilitation costs can exhaust family finances. Although costs vary according to the extent of the injury and any long-term effects, the estimated cost of caring for a survivor of severe traumatic brain injury is between $600,000 and $1,875,000 over a lifetime. The average lifetime cost of treating an individual with traumatic spinal-cord injury is estimated to be between $500,000 and $2,000,000, according to BrainandSpinalCord.org.
In addition to the physical effects of the injuries themselves, there is also the personal effect of the present and future loss of the enjoyment of life for the injured victim and his or her family.
