What Drivers Should Know About Motorcycle Braking

March 2, 2020 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

Motorcycles do not stop as quickly as larger vehicles. Under perfect conditions, they require at least 120 feet to slow down from 60 mph to zero. Bikesafer.com reports that vehicles traveling at 65 mph would take 3.83 seconds of braking time to stop.

What Drivers Should Know About Motorcycle BrakingThere are several factors that play a role in motorcycle braking. These include reaction time, distance, speed of the other vehicles, road conditions, and the weather. Drivers of most vehicles can slam on their brakes and come to a quick stop. Motorcyclists cannot do this because sudden stops can cause them to flip over the front of the motorcycle.

Weight distribution is a braking issue. Usually, a motorcyclist’s weight is evenly balanced between the front and rear wheels. When brakes are applied, a motorcyclist’s weight can shift toward the front and inertia carries him/her forward when the bike slows down.

Motorcycles often reduce their speed by downshifting, putting the motorcycle in a lower gear. When doing this, brake lights do not illuminate and other drivers may not realize a change in speed.

Drivers need to understand the braking capabilities of motorcycles in order to safely share the roads. RideApart says the most common motorcycle/car accident is a fender bender where the motorcycle stops and the car hits it from behind. A fender bender can kill a motorcyclist.

RoadGuardians.org says data shows that “…braking errors are common in motorcycle crashes. Regardless of whose ‘fault’ a situation might have been (a car driver’s fault, the rider’s fault, both, or neither), the ability to get [a] bike stopped quickly (or even slowed down quickly) is critical to avoiding collisions.”
