What Questions Should You Ask Before Hiring a Personal Injury Attorney
March 6, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | ShareIt's important to have a personal injury attorney if you or a loved one has been injured due to the negligence of another. But not just any personal injury attorney. Hiring the right attorney for your personal injury case is very important. It can mean the difference between winning the case and not and the size of a settlement or jury verdict.
Here are some of the questions you should consider before hiring a personal injury attorney to handle your case:
- Is the attorney a Board Certified Civil Trial Attorney?
- Has the attorney been recognized by Martindale-Hubbell, the AV Peer Rating, as having the highest possible legal ability and ethical standards?
- Ask the attorney for results of his trials, and how many jury trials he has successfully conducted. Is the attorney a life member of both the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum? (Fewer than 1% of lawyers in the United States are members of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum which recognizes lawyers who have won million and multi-million dollar verdicts.)
- Is the attorney a member of the Florida Bar Association and the American Bar Association?
- Is the attorney licensed to practice in both State and Federal courts?
- Does the attorney specialize exclusively in cases similar to yours - personal injury, accidental injury and wrongful death? Only a Board Certified attorney is allowed to call themselves a "specialist" or an "expert".
- How many cases has the attorney won?
- Who will handle your case? Will it be the principal or an associate?
- Will your case matter to the firm or will it be just a "number"? "One size does not fit all."
- What is the attorney's Commitment to your case?
- Will your case be handled on a contingency basis (no fee or costs unless there is a monetary recovery)?
- Assess the firm's reputation in the community. If your case needs to go to trial, what would a jury think of your lawyer's image in the community?
- Do you feel comfortable with the attorney and staff?
- Will they be responsive to your questions?
It is critical to do your "homework" when selecting a personal injury attorney.
