What Stores Have The Most Children's Product Recalls?

May 11, 2015 | Category: Child Injuries, Defective Products | Share

In a press release in February 2015, Kids In Danger (KID) reported on their recent survey,  A Decade of Data: An In-depth Look at 2014 and a Ten-Year Retrospective on Children’s Product Recalls.  The survey found there was a decrease in incidents, injuries, the number of children's product recalls and the deaths related to them. The development of mandatory standards for children's products in the 2008 Consumer Product Safety Act is a part of the breakthrough.  20 percent of the products recalled in 2014 by the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) were children's products.

Who issued the most children's product recalls in 2014?

CBS News reported that Target issued more children's product recalls in the past five years than any other company. They further reported that the numbers revealed in recall notices may say more about a company's safety philosophy than just how many recalls they have undertaken. 4.8 million units were covered in 24 recalls of children's products by Target between 2009 and 2014. The 24 recalls were made subsequent to a total of 106 incidents and 30 injuries according to KID.

The second most recalls during this same time period were by Mattel's Fisher-Price line of products. Prior to its 19 recalls which involved approximately 9.3 million units, they had reports of 828 incidents involving 130 injuries. The largest contributor to the numbers was the Rock 'N Play infant sleeper which had 600 mold complaints.

Here is a complete list of companies which reported the most child product recalls between 2009 and 2014 along with the number of incidents and injuries according to KID:

  1. Target, 24 recalls, involving 106 incidents and 30 injuries
  2. Fisher-Price, 19 recalls, involving 828 incidents and 130 injuries
  3. Dorel Juvenile Group, 11 recalls, involving 808 incidents and 10 injuries
  4. IKEA, 11 recalls, involving 55 incidents and 12 injuries
  5. Pottery Barn Kids, 11 recalls, involving 86 incidents and 17 injuries
  6. Wal-Mart, 11 recalls, involving 6 incidents and 2 injuries

Companies are supposed to alert the CPSC as soon as they have identified a product with has a safety issue. This system is "self-reporting". There are requirement guidelines that manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers are to use in reporting to the CPSC: They are:

  • When a defective product could create a substantial risk of injury to consumers.
  • When a product creates an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death.
  • When a product fails to comply with an applicable product safety rule.
  • When there is an incident in which a child chokes on a small part in a toy or game and either dies, is seriously injured, stops breathing or requires medical treatment.
