What to Do If Your Loved One Contracts COVID-19 in a Nursing Home
April 8, 2020 | Category: Nursing Home Neglect/Abuse | ShareThe Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says if you suspect you are infected with COVID-19, you should “take steps to help prevent the disease from spreading to people in your home and community.”
Nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, and assisted living facilities present many problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. Facilities may be over-crowded and poorly staffed to assist residents. They need to make accommodations to ensure residents are at least 6 feet apart and not in close quarters.
Older adults with serious underlying medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and lung disease, are at a higher risk of developing COVID-19. They need to be directed to care as soon as symptoms become evident.
The CDC provides nursing homes and long-term care facilities with a COVID-19 preparedness checklist:
- Rapid identification and management of ill residents
- Considerations for visitors and consultant staff
- Supplies and resources
- Sick leave policies and other occupational health considerations
- Education and training
- Surge capacity for staffing, equipment, and supplies
- Postmortem care
