Where Do Most Motorcycle Accidents Happen?
December 7, 2020 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | ShareFlorida has beautiful weather and many exciting areas to explore, making it the ideal place to ride motorcycles. With more motorcyclists on the road, all vehicles must stay alert and watch out for motorcyclists.
WINK News reported on November 3 that a 27-year-old motorcyclist from Lehigh Acres was tragically killed in a North Fort Myers crash. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the motorcyclist was driving south on SR-31 when a sedan turned left onto Bayshore Road, pulling into his path. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike into the path of another vehicle. A Fort Myers motorcycle accident attorney said the motorcyclist was tragically pronounced dead at Lee Health.
Motorcycle accidents can happen anytime at any location. However, there are some locations that are more prone to dangerous situations.
Intersections – According to the NHTSA, around 56% of all motorcycle crashes occur on urban roadways, with the majority of those accidents taking place at intersections. Intersections, like SR-31 and Bayshore Road, are dangerous for most motorists, but for motorcyclists, they can be fatal. The most common intersection accidents are:
- Accidents Caused by Left-Turning Vehicles – This is the most dangerous situation for motorcyclists and causes 42% of all motorcycle accidents. When vehicles turn left without seeing motorcycles, motorcyclists are often left with nowhere to go.
- Rear-End Accidents – Stop signs and stop lights can make a motorcyclist vulnerable to rear-end accidents. A 3,000-pound vehicle can cause the situation to be deadly, even if it is going slowly. A motorcyclist may be thrown from his/her bike, says Fort Myers motorcycle accident attorney.
Freeways and Interstates – There is an increase in traffic and rate of speed on freeways and interstates. Vehicles may suddenly change lanes without signaling and go into the path of other oncoming vehicles, including motorcycles. Motorcyclists are more vulnerable than drivers of other vehicles and often are injured or die in freeway and interstate accidents.
Two-Lane Roads – Two-lane roads are also common locations for motorcycle accidents. Oncoming traffic poses a dangerous situation for motorcyclists. Experts report that 78% of all motorcycle/vehicle accidents involve some type of head-on collision when they happen on two-lane roads.
