Why Rollover Accidents Happen in SW Florida

May 10, 2021 | Category: Vehicle Rollovers | Share

Rollover crashes frequently occur in Southwest Florida, causing serious injuries and fatalities to drivers and passengers.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported a 60-year-old Fort Myers man tragically died following a crash on Michael G. Rippe Parkway and Briarcliff Road in Fort Myers on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. According to the FHP, the crash happened around 3 p.m. at the intersection. The deceased was traveling north and made a left on a solid green light at the intersection when another driver heading south on Michael G. Rippe Parkway collided with him causing the rollover accident. The 24-year-old southbound driver was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Why Rollover Accidents Happen in SW Florida"Rollover accidents are violent. The forces involved in a rollover crash can partially or fully eject the driver and/or passengers from the vehicle, even when wearing seatbelts. When a vehicle rolls over, the roof can collapse on those inside, almost always causing serious injuries such as paralysis, brain injuries, broken bones, or even death,” said Florida Vehicle Rollover Attorney Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that rollovers are dangerous incidents and have a higher fatality rate than other kinds of crashes. Rollovers account for nearly 35 percent of all deaths from passenger vehicle crashes.

There are a variety of different factors that cause rollover accidents including:

  • Driver distraction
  • Road conditions
  • Faulty vehicle design
  • Weather conditions
  • Driver behavior
  • Poor vehicle maintenance
