Xarelto Injuries and Deaths - Do you have a case?

January 26, 2015 | Category: Prescription Errors | Share

Some patients who have been using  physician-prescribed Xarelto as a blood thinner have, unfortunately, experienced injuries, or death, as a result. Most commonly the injuries reported are pulmonary embolisms and deep vein thrombosis. Other reported injuries were stokes, heart attacks, gastrointestinal bleeding, severe hemorrhaging and other bleeding problems. The estimates are that thousands have been injured and hundreds have died. The National Institute of Health (NIH) provides the following information on these injuries:

Pulmonary Embolisms and Deep Vein Thrombosis:

According to (NIH) pulmonary embolisms are sudden blockages in a lung artery. "The cause is usually a blood clot in the leg called a deep vein thrombosis that breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream to the lung. Pulmonary embolism is a serious condition that can cause:

  • Permanent damage to the affected lung.
  • Low oxygen levels in your blood.
  • Damage to other organs in your body from not getting enough oxygen.

If a clot is large, or if there are many clots, pulmonary embolism can cause death."

The NIH further reports that half the people who have pulmonary embolism have no symptoms. If they do have symptoms, these can include shortness of breath, chest pain or coughing up blood. Blood clot symptoms include warmth, swelling, pain, tenderness and redness of the leg.

Strokes, Heart Attacks:

Strokes happen when the blood stops flowing to the brain. Brain cells begin to die within minutes. The symptoms of a stroke are:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body).
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech.
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

Heart attack symptoms are generally:

  • Chest discomfort - pressure, squeezing, or pain.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Discomfort in the upper body - arms, shoulders, neck, back.
  • Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, lightheadedness, sweating.

Drugs.com provides the following list of the most common side effects from Xarelto (rivaroxaban), which may or may not cause severe injury or death, but for which patients should contact their doctors immediately. They are:
